Kirigalpoththa Mountain Peak is located in the Nuwara Eliya district in Sri Lanka. The name of the mountain Kirigalpoththa Mountain Peak means Kiri(Milk) Gal (Rock) Potha (Book). It may have gained its name because of the tall trees that are with mottled white bark. Kirigalpoththa Mountain Peak is just the place you shouldn’t miss to visit on your visit to Sri Lanka.
Hiking in Kirigalpoththa Mountain Peak
Though Kirigalpoththa Mountain Peak is the 2nd highest mountain in Sri Lanka it is the highest mountain that is open for the general public to hike because Pidurutalagala(the highest mountain) is off limits to the public because the military forces and protecting it after it was degraded by people who visited it in the past. It’s trail is in Horton Plains and the length is 5.6 km. The climb will last for about 3-4 hours and the difficulty level is moderate. It is better to travel as groups and not as a solo hiker.
Reaching the destination
From Colombo
Go on McCallum Road and enter the Colombo-Katunayake Expressway from Colombo. Keep right and merge to Southern Expressway and take the 1st exit to Colombo-Batticaloa highway. Then take the 3rd exit onto Balagoda By Pass and turn left to Nonpareli Estate road for 14.5 km to reach your destination.
From Nuwara Eliya
Head southeast on Peradeniya-Badulla-Chenkaladi Highway and join to Beragala-Hali Ela Highway. Turn left to Nonpareli Estate road for 14.5 km to reach your destination.
