Ella

Ella is a small beautiful town in the Badulla District of Uva Province. It is about two hundred kilometres east of Colombo and is located at an elevation of 1,041 meters above sea level.

• The location has a wealthy bio-diversity, dense with numerous kinds of flowers and fauna.


• Ella is surrounded from all sides by hills covered with forests and tea plantations.


• The city has cool weather surrounding lowlands because of its elevation. However, it will regularly rain in the afternoon, for an hour or so.

• Ella's a few stops from Badulla at the end of the railway line that snakes through the Hill Country.


• Trains visit Colombo and Kandy from here.


• The fares are ludicrously cheap in second and third classes.


• The views are spectacular.


• It's no trouble getting a seat in the 2nd/3rd class going to Colombo or Kandy because the trains from Badulla are pretty empty until reaching Nanu Oya.


• However, the reverse going up to Ella may be pretty crowded until the remaining two or three hours of the journey.


• Ella's railway station itself is prettily quaint.

1. ii) By Road:-

• Buses move south through Ella Gap to Wellawaya in which you can trade for some destinations in the south of the island.


• There is also a recently delivered direct bus service (route 31) to Matara and Galle, which stops at various locations alongside the south coast.
